It's always been said "No man walks alone." The church is no different. In fact, if there's anywhere in this world where "no man should walk alone" it should be in the Christian Community. As I think through this all too common phrase that I have adopted for my life, it honestly makes me think of "How would I want to Staff a Church if I were Pastor?" Well Jason, you may ask, how exactly would you do that? Let's get started.
First and foremost, the people I would hire to work alongside of me in the ministry are "partners" for the Gospel to reach our community and world for Christ. Never would I hire anyone who does not share that same view and passion. Here are the top 3 things I would look for in hiring a staff: (already assuming I'm hiring on sound doctrine and teaching abilities)
1. They would have a "Whatever it takes attitude"
Seriously, this is a top priority to me. I have seen firsthand how Pastor's have somehow adopted this "it's not my job, get someone else to do it" mentality. To be a part of a team that wins the World Series or Super Bowl, you must be willing to do whatever it takes to get your team to accomplish that goal. The same is true with the leadership within the church. To have a staff that has the mindset that they are willing to do whatever it takes (within Scripture of course) to reach our community for Christ and help our people mature is a trait that can not be replaced. We can't be apathetic.
2. Excellence is a Passion
This could be one of the top downfalls of the church in our time. People walk in and out of our doors of the church now just as they would going to Taco Bell to place a "to go order." The question for me is simple: "How do I do things with such excellence that those people are attracted to Jesus and desire to stay."To quote a pastor of one of the mega churches in the southeast, "The church seems to be the only place in the world where something is done without excellence and everybody will say, 'Oh well, at least they tried." May God have mercy on my soul when I get to the place in my life where I am just "trying" to get by and not doing things with excellence. A staff committted to excellence and is passionate about that is undeniably a top priority.
3. Relates well with Believers and Non-Believers
In a world that is consumed with "Seeker Sensitive" churches, it's important for me that my staff have a well balanced approach to ministry. The key here is understanding how to relate with PEOPLE. Notice I emphasized the word PEOPLE, because a Christian and Non-Christian are both members of the human race. They are people. Without a staff that relates well to both types of people, the church will grow stale and will ony see growth by "sheep stealing." I want to hire people who are passionate about seeing the lost come to Christ and Maturing our believers into Self Sustaining followers of Jesus. Our staff must relate to the whole spectrum of people.
Hopefully one day God will bless a church somewhere out there that they have staff who are ALL pasionate about excellence, have a whatever it takes mentality, and relate well with people while at the same time upholding to sound doctrine. Have a great day everyone.
