"We are not ashamed to be a follower of Jesus and we will lift the banner high till our last breath. We will fight for the orphans, widows, street children, lepers, children with AIDS, that they may be cared for, loved and have the right to hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ."
-Dr. Samuel Thomas, Hopegivers International
I received this email yesterday from Dr. Thomas as he prepares to head back to India from the United States. Dr. Thomas has been under severe pressure from the Indian government and threats upon his life from the radicals in the nation of India. He had not seen his family in over 14 months, and was granted a 3 week visit to the states on the promise that he would return to face the court system in India (which is messed up to begin with.) A man of his word, and a man of integrity, Dr. Thomas left 2 days ago to an unknown fate. Leaving behind his wife and children, he headed back to the country that he has poured his life into for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A man of true affection for the downcast and unloved. A man with true affections for the Lord Jesus Christ. A true hero of the faith.
Jonathan Edwards writes in his book "The Religious Affections" that true religion is indeed filled with affections from the heart. Joy, Love, Peace, Humility, Mercy, Compassion, Worship, etc... Without these affections, our religion is deemed worthless. A man without affections is a man without religion. As I sat reading this book just last night, I could only think of one man who is the epitome of true affection, and that man is Dr. M.A. Thomas and his son Samuel. I only hope and pray that I will one day have the heart and compassion for the lost, the helpless, and the orphaned as these men do.
These 2 men, out of any other men I have ever met in my life, are some of the greatest examples of this "Great Cloud of Witnesses" that we run this race with. If you think about, pray for them as they are faced with many trials right now. Pray for the orphans of India, and pray for the pastors that their orphanages and schools raise up and send out into their country, and who will probably lose their life for the sake of the Gospel. Pray for these TRUE MEN OF AFFECTION.
